Oracle is making a big move into the data lakehouse business with the launch of its MySQL Heatwave Lakehouse service. This managed database-as-a-service (DBaaS) offering is built on top of the popular MySQL relational database platform developed by Oracle. While the core MySQL database focuses on Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) workloads, Heatwave extends its capabilities to support Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) as well.
Traditionally, relational databases like MySQL Heatwave could only query data stored within the database itself. However, the MySQL Heatwave Lakehouse changes that by allowing the database to query data stored in cloud object storage, also known as a data lake. This concept of a data lakehouse aims to bridge the gap between traditional databases and data warehouse technologies, providing the benefits of indexing and low cost associated with a cloud data lake.
Oracle initially previewed the MySQL Heatwave Lakehouse service in October 2022 and is now making it generally available on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and Microsoft Azure. The company plans to expand availability to Amazon Web Services later this year, with the goal of enabling organizations to use the service regardless of where their data is located.
