Data platform vendor DataStax is making a big move into the vector database space, announcing the general availability of vector search in its flagship Astra DB cloud database.
DataStax is a leading contributor to the open-source Apache Cassandra database, and Astra DB is their commercially supported cloud Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) offering. While Cassandra is primarily known as a NoSQL database, it has been expanding its capabilities to support various data types and use cases, including AI/ML.
In fact, DataStax has been actively focusing on AI/ML throughout 2023. They acquired AI feature engineering vendor Kaskada in January and integrated their technology into DataStax Luna ML service, which was launched in May.
The new Astra DB vector support update further enhances DataStax’s AI/ML capabilities, providing organizations with a trusted and widely deployed database platform for both traditional and AI workloads.
