When it comes to staying ahead in the current tech-driven market, ecommerce giant Wayfair is tackling artificial intelligence (AI) head-on. The home furnishings company recently announced a new AI initiative called Wayfair Create which focuses on the use of generative AI to both inform and automate design decisions.
As part of this three-year project, Wayfair has assembled an interdisciplinary team composed of tech and design experts to explore and develop AI-driven design tools. This team will be focusing on how AI can be used to generate design ideas that are personalized to a given user’s preferences.
Wayfair emphasizes that AI offers the potential to generate creative ideas at a scale and speed that is difficult for humans to achieve. However, in order to meet consumer expectations for quality and authenticity, Wayfair believes it’s important to maintain a human element throughout the entire process. To facilitate this, the company’s design team is collaborating closely with its AI team in order to ensure that the design ideas created by the AI are in line with Wayfair’s design aesthetic and standards.
Wayfair also plans to evaluate new AI-generated designs using customer feedback through its proprietary Return Rate Index as well as customer surveys. This will allow Wayfair to adjust designs to best match what the customer is looking for. The company also says that the new AI-driven tools should assist with creating better product offerings at a faster rate while reducing the overall cost of production.
Overall, Wayfair’s commitment to AI is a clear indication of its desire to stay competitive in the digital age. It’s exciting to see how the company will continue to use AI to power its core business while keeping the human element much part of the process.
