Experts are warning that a letter sent by two U.S. senators to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday, which questioned the leak of Meta’s open-source large language model LLaMA, is a threat to the open-source AI community. This comes at a crucial moment when Congress is prioritizing AI regulation, while open-source AI is seeing a wave of new LLMs.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently testified before the Senate Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology & the Law, agreeing with calls for a new AI regulatory agency. The letter to Zuckerberg was sent by Senators Blumenthal and Hawley on behalf of the same subcommittee, expressing concerns about LLaMA’s potential for misuse.
