In a move to raise the stakes in the race to build the best conversational AI, Google has announced that it has enhanced its open-source natural language processing (NLP) model, BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers). This comes as Google takes on the popular social media ChatGPT, a model developed by OpenAI that is also open-source and has been receiving a lot of attention for its impressive capabilities.
Google’s BERT model is already widely employed in many applications, such as extracting information from websites, translating documents, and constructing virtual agents. Now, Google has enhanced its capabilities to allow BERT to understand the context of conversations and answer questions more accurately. The revised version of BERT is now called ERNIE 2.0, and has been trained on a large-scale public dialogue dataset.
The new capabilities that have been added to BERT are expected to improve the model’s ability to recognize more complex conversations, though it still lags behind other models such as ChatGPT in terms of accuracy and speed. Google’s aim with the update is to make BERT more widely applicable in conversational AI, which is becoming increasingly important as more companies use AI applications to drive customer service and support.
Google’s ERNIE 2.0 is also more cost effective than ChatGPT and other similar models, meaning companies can gain access to conversational AI capabilities without large upfront costs. Google is offering the model for free, making it more accessible to companies looking to implement AI.
Overall, it’s clear that Google is trying to take the lead in conversational AI with its new and improved BERT model, which is now known as ERNIE 2.0. With its enhanced capabilities, Google is hoping to make its model more compatible with conversational use cases and more accessible to companies looking to use conversational AI. Whether Google will be able to compete with the more established ChatGPT remains to be seen, but it’s clear that the competition to build the best conversational AI is heating up.
