Marvel Studios has been a powerhouse in the entertainment industry for the past 15 years, bringing beloved comic book franchises to life on the big and small screens.
However, their latest TV series, Secret Invasion, which premiered on Disney+ today, June 21, 2023, has sparked controversy due to the use of AI to generate the imagery of the title cards in the opening sequence of each episode.
“Very disappointed that Marvel Studios decided to use AI for the opening credits of Secret Invasion,” tweeted a photographer
Recent reports indicate that Marvel Studios is facing criticism after utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) software to create the opening sequence of the studio’s newest series, Secret Invasion.
The limited series follows a storyline in which shape-shifting aliens from the planet Skrull try to overthrow Earth, disguised as Marvel characters such as Nick Fury, Captain Marvel, and Spider-Man. As part of the marketing of the series, Marvel released an opening sequence which featured thousands of shapes morphing into different characters.
The sequence was generated using AI software, prompting some fans to question why Marvel opted to use a computer-generated sequence rather than support a visual artist. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel executive vice president Victoria Alonso defended the decision, arguing that AI software provided the most economical and effective approach to creating the sequence. Alonso added that despite utilizing AI software, Marvel still employed numerous visual effects artists to design the sequence.
However, some fans remain unconvinced. On Twitter, many argued that Marvel should have chosen to commission a handmade sequence instead of resorting to AI-generated visuals. Although the vocal minority of Marvel fans who oppose AI-generated opening sequences is relatively small, the studio’s decision to automate the artistry of its latest series’ visuals remains controversial.
Regardless of this criticism, the Secret Invasion opening sequence – generated with the help of AI software – continues to draw positive attention for its visual and technical excellence. Among these admirers are the various visual effects artists whose work was incorporated into the sequence and who, according to a statement from Marvel, “are integral to the creative process.”
