Today, a number of leading Artificial Intelligence (AI) researchers and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) from some of the world’s largest technology firms have issued a joint statement cautioning of the risks associated with the emergence of intelligent machines, including the potential for extinction of the human race.
The statement, which was signed by industry leaders such as Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis, and OpenAI chairman Sam Altman, among many others, warns of the threats posed by the continuing development of AI systems, some of which are becoming increasingly independent, autonomous, and powerful.
The statement points out that AI systems are becoming increasingly entwined with many aspects of modern life, and that the effects of AI-driven automation and decision-making can be both far-reaching and unpredictable. The risks of AI-based technology outgrowing humanity’s collective capacity to manage and regulate it are real, and the statement’s authors warn that if these risks are not appropriately identified and managed, the human race could be at risk of extinction.
The statement calls for further research into the ethical framework for AI development, as well as stronger international regulation around the technologies. It also advocates for more collaboration between scientists, engineers, academics, business leaders, and policymakers to ensure that AI systems are built in a way which will reduce the potential risks they pose.
This joint statement is a clear indication of the importance of this issue to some of the world’s leading innovators, and of the need for greater research, understanding, and regulation of AI technologies. Ensuring that AI systems are developed in a responsible and informed way is vital to ensuring the safety and security of citizens around the world.
